Allocation of Social Housing in Porto in Recent Years
Social housing in Porto has been a priority for the municipal authority. Over the past four years, the City Council, through Domus Social, has allocated more than 1,200 dwellings, including both newly built units and internal transfers.
This average of around 300 social housing units per year reflects an ongoing effort to respond to the housing needs of lower-income populations, reinforcing the role of the public housing stock in the city.
Reduced Evictions and Usage Rules
According to data presented at the Municipal Assembly, eviction proceedings related to social housing in Porto have been limited.
Over the past four years, only 188 cases have been initiated, mostly related to non-use of the dwellings, improper use, or situations contrary to the law. These figures highlight a management approach focused on residential stability and the proper use of existing social housing.
Housing Stock and Affordable Rents
The Social Housing Observatory of the Municipality of Porto indicates that there are currently 28,180 residents living in social housing in Porto, distributed across 12,409 dwellings.
The average rent charged is €77.06, a figure that reinforces the social and affordable nature of this housing stock. In parallel, the municipality already provides 407 affordable housing units and plans to allocate a further 200 during this year.
Municipal Strategy for the Future of Housing
For the municipal executive, the main challenge of social housing in Porto is not the lack of homes, but rather the shortage of housing at affordable prices.
The strategy involves selective policies, continuous investment, and the enhancement of the public spaces surrounding social housing neighborhoods. Following significant investment in the building stock, the municipality now intends to strengthen urban quality and the integration of these neighborhoods into the city, ensuring better living conditions for residents.
